As a wedding photographer who’s weathered quite a few stormy ceremonies (literally!), I can tell you this: rainy wedding days are not the disaster Pinterest makes them out to be. In fact, some of the most romantic, emotional, and downright magical weddings I’ve photographed have happened under umbrellas and over puddles. So if the forecast is looking a little… moody for your big day, don’t panic. I’ve got you covered 😂
Here are my top 5 Rainy Wedding Day tips to help you turn a soggy forecast into something beautifully unforgettable:
1. Embrace the Forecast
First things first! It’s totally okay to feel disappointed when you see those little raincloud icons on your weather app. But then? Embrace it. A rainy wedding doesn’t mean the end of dreamy portraits or joyful moments. It means cozy vibes, glowy light, and (if we’re lucky) a few spontaneous kisses under a shared umbrella. I promise, the rain brings its own kind of magic.

2. Clear Umbrellas Are Your Best Friend
Pro tip: get yourself some clear umbrellas! Not only do they let light through beautifully (a photographer’s dream!), but they also add a whimsical, romantic touch to your portraits.
Bonus: No need to awkwardly huddle under one tiny parasol; these babies are made for two. I always carry a couple in my trunk just in case, but having your own stash on hand means you’ll be ready for anything.

3. Have a Backup Plan (and Communicate It!)
Whether you’re saying “I do” outdoors or planning your reception under the stars, it’s important to chat with your planner or venue about a Plan B. Covered patios, tents with twinkle lights, or a cozy indoor space nearby can save the day if the rain really starts to come down. Make sure your vendors know the plan, too. And as your photographer, I’ll scout both locations ahead of time so we’re ready to roll, rain or shine.

4. Trust Your Photographer
Here’s the truth: rainy wedding photos can be some of the most romantic, cinematic images in your entire gallery but you’ve got to trust your photographer (ME!). I know where the light is hiding, how to make that wet sidewalk sparkle, and how to keep you (mostly) dry while still getting the shot. If I’m doing silly dances in a puddle to make you laugh while you twirl under an umbrella? Just go with it. That’s the gold right there.

5. Let Go and Have Fun
The most important Rainy Wedding tip? Don’t let the weather steal your joy. You’re getting married to your favorite person in the world — and that’s what really matters. Dance in the rain, kiss in the drizzle, laugh when your dress gets a little muddy. Your guests will follow your lead, and honestly? Some of the best memories are born in those unplanned, perfectly imperfect moments.
So if your wedding day skies turn gray, just remember: you’re still marrying the love of your life. And with the right mindset, a couple of umbrellas, and a photographer who knows how to work the weather, your Rainy Wedding might just be the fairytale you didn’t know you needed.
