You’re newly engaged and starting to plan your wedding! YAY!
Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the most crucial decisions you’ll make as you plan your big day, and usually one of the first you book! Your photographer will capture the moments that you’ll cherish forever, so it’s essential to find someone whose style and approach align with your vision. To help you make an informed choice, here are the top 10 questions to ask a potential wedding photographer before booking them.
Why should you care what advice I have to give?
Hey – I’m Celeste! A wedding photographer AND videographer.
I’ve been in your shoes, reaching out to TONS of photographers and stressing over the options. If you have never planned a wedding before and you’re not working in the industry, it is daunting trying to find a reliable vendor you can trust with such an important day.
This is not a blog to get you to hire ME. It’s to give you the proper information to make an informed decision that is best for YOU!!! There are so many options and styles out there, and my photos will not be for everyone. I will not accept a wedding if I feel my style of imagery is not 100% what the couple dreams of.
With my personal wedding planning experience, and over 100+ weddings, here are the top current questions you should be asking your potential wedding photographer.

1. What Is Your Photography Style?
- Understanding a photographer’s style is key to ensuring their work matches your vision. Are they more traditional, capturing posed portraits, or do they lean towards a documentary style, capturing candid moments? Some photographers blend various styles, so be sure to look through their portfolio and ask how they describe their approach to ensure it aligns with what you’re looking for.

2. Can We See a Full Wedding Album?
A portfolio showcasing only a few highlight photos may not give you the full picture of what to expect. Ask to see a complete wedding album or gallery from a recent wedding that is similar to yours. This will provide insight into their ability to capture the entire event, from the details to the key moments, and how they handle varying lighting and scenarios.

3. What Is Included In Your Wedding Photography Packages? (And Is It Customizable?)
Wedding photography packages can vary widely. Some may include an engagement shoot, additional hours, or a second shooter, while others may not. Clarify what’s included in each package, and make sure it covers your needs. Ask if you will receive unlimited images or if you pay per image afterward. * A bonus question to add on here is if they offer any flexibility in their packages.
4. How Do You Handle Travel and Accommodation Costs?
If your wedding is taking place at a destination or outside the photographer’s local area, discuss travel and accommodation arrangements. Some photographers include these costs in their packages, while others may charge separately. Make sure you understand these details upfront to avoid any surprises later.

5. When Will I Recieve My Final Images?
Understanding when you can expect to receive your photos is crucial. Ask about the typical turnaround time for photo delivery and whether there are options for expedited processing if you need the images sooner. Some photographers may provide sneak peeks shortly after the wedding, but a full gallery might take several weeks or even months. These details should also be laid out in a formal contract. *A bonus question is how long you have access to your online gallery.
6. What is Your Backup Plan?
Technical issues or emergencies can arise, so it’s important to know what steps your photographer takes to ensure they can deliver your photos. Ask about their backup equipment and procedures, as well as their contingency plan in case of illness or unforeseen circumstances. You will want to hear that they use at least two camera bodies and have at least 2-3 backups of your images at all times.

7. How Do You Handle Post-Processing, Editing, and Delivery?
Editing is a crucial part of the photography process, and different photographers have different approaches. Inquire about their post-processing techniques and how they handle color correction, retouching, and special effects. Ensure their editing style aligns with the look and feel you want for your photos. *A bonus you can ask here is how long they hold onto your raw files for.
8. How Do You Work With Other Vendors?
Your photographer will likely be interacting with other vendors on your wedding day, such as the wedding planner, florist, and especially videographers. Ask how they collaborate with other professionals to ensure a smooth flow of events and to avoid any potential conflicts. You will want to hear more than just “I get along with everyone”. All weddings have a photographer, but not all have a videographer. This means that your photography MAY not have experience working alongside another creative vendor such as a videographer.

9. How Can I Print My Photos Afterwards?
Most professional photographers will have an online store where you can print your images. This is great and convenient! But it is important to know if you will receive printing rights to print your photo’s anywhere you would like.
10. Can We Meet or Have a Call Before Booking?
Finally, it’s essential to have a personal connection with your photographer. Arrange a meeting or a call to discuss your vision, ask any additional questions, and get a sense of their personality and professionalism. A good rapport will help ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience on your wedding day.

Remember to Take Your Time!
ASK questions!
READ reviews!
Choosing the right wedding photographer involves more than just liking their photos. By asking these questions, you’ll gain a clearer understanding of their style, approach, and how well they fit with your needs. Remember, your wedding photos are an investment in memories that will last a lifetime, so take the time to choose wisely.
Here are a few more bonus questions to consider.
- What is your experience level with weddings? (More than 100? Only barn weddings? Elopements? Etc.)
- How big of a team do you use?
- What if I want extra hours on the day of my wedding?
- Is the package flexible AFTER booking with you?
- How many weddings do you shoot per weekend?
